Who Painted This Picture?
Three hundred years ago a painter lived in Spain. His name was Murrillo. He was a great painter. He painted beautiful pictures and had many pupils. Every morning Murillo went to his studio to paint and teach his pupils. Once Murillo came to his studio and found a very beautiful picture there . It was a picture of a woman’s head. “who painted this picture?’ he asked his pupils. Nobody answered. Sebastian, the painter said, “you were here all right. Did you see anybody in my studio?”
Sebastian was his slave, and he stayed in the studio every night. “No, master, answered the slave , “I saw nobody in the studio.”
“Somebody was here last night!”  The slave did not answer anything. Night came. Everybody went away from the studio. Sebastian put his bed near the picture and fell asleep. It was three o’clock in the morning. Sebastian got up came up to the picture and looked at it. Then he began to paint. He did not think of time. Suddenly he heard a noise. He looked back and saw Muriillo and his pupils. They stood behind him it was morning.
“Sebastian,” cried Murillo, “you are a very good painter. How did you learn to paint?” “I took me lessons from you, master,” the slave answered. “ From me?  I gave you no lessons.” “But you gave many lessons to your pupils, and I heard them,” answered Sebastian . “ You are a better painter than any of my pupils here.” “What shall we do with this boy ? What do you want , Sebastian?” asked the great painter. “do you want money?”  “Give freedom to my father,” answered the slave . “You are not only a great painter, but you have a great heart,” said Murillo. “ I shall give freedom not only to your father but to you , too. You are not my slave now but my best pupil.” Murillo and Sebastian began to work together and painted many pictures together.

ANA’S GREAT DAY
It was a Tuesday morning in April. Ana got up early. She

A PERFECT BEACH HAT
Kimmie was visiting her Aunt Jane at her house at the
beach. It was a beautiful summer day. Kimmie built a giant
sand castle in the morning. Aunt Jane took pictures of the
castle to send to Kimmie’s parents.
Kimmie wanted to play on the beach that afternoon. She
wanted to build another sand castle. Aunt Jane told her it
was too sunny. Aunt Jane said Kimmie could only go if she
had sunscreen and a hat. Kimmie didn’t have a hat. Aunt
Jane had a lot of hats. Aunt Jane said that Kimmie could
borrow one of hers, since bigger hats were better anyway.
Kimmie tried on four hats.
The pink one was really pretty, but it had a big bow. The
ribbons kept going into Kimmie’s eyes. That would not be
good for building a sand castle.
The blue hat was too fancy. Kimmie did not like that hat at
all.
The red hat was nice, but it had flowers on it. Kimmie was
afraid the flowers would get dirty.
Then, Kimmie saw a big straw hat with a short red ribbon on
it. The bow was not too droopy. The hat was not too fancy. It

THE WORLD’S LONGEST  BRIDGE
The Akashi Kaiyko Bridge in southern Japan is the world’s longest
bridge. The Akashi Kaiyko Bridge spans the Akashi Strait, connecting Awaji
Island to Kobe, an important industrial center. The bridge has a span of 5973
feet (1991 meters), making it over 25% longer than its nearest competition: the
Humber Bridge in England. Strangely, there may be longer bridges in the world,
but the Guinness Book of World Records measures the longest bridges
according to their record-breaking spans.
The Akashi Kaiyko Bridge is a suspension bridge. This means that the
roadway is suspended from pillars by cables.
The concrete pillars have to be tall enough to support the whole weight of
the bridge. The pillars on the Akashi Kaiyko Bridge are 900 feet tall. These
pillars had to be built to withstand not only huge waves but also high-speed
winds, and possibly even violent earthquakes, which are not uncommon in the
area. The bridge has survived one earthquake already: its span was extended by
more than 3 feet by the Kobe earthquake of 1995.
The cables weigh 50,000 tons and have a diameter of almost four feet
each. Each cable contains 290 hexagonal strands; each strand is composed of
127 steel wires. The total length of the wire used is more than 200,000 miles,
enough to circle the Earth 7.5 times!
The first plans to connect Kobe to Naruto via Awaji Island were voiced in
1955, but it took the government thirty years to decide to really build the bridge.
The next three years were spent surveying the site and construction commenced
in 1988. In designing the bridge, special consideration was given to its effect on
the surroundings, great emphasis was placed on a “pleasing balance between
light and shade” and also on the choice of the perfect color.
The construction of the bridge was a very complicated and
technologically draining process, which took ten years to complete. Casting
concrete in 300 feet of water, installing special pilot ropes over the strait by
helicopter, and finally stretching the gigantic steel cables surely wasn’t an easy
job. Ten years after construction commenced in 1988, the bridge was finished
and the six-lane highway finally opened to traffic.
The bridge has made the transportation from island to island much easier,
so in addition to breaking a record, the Akashi Kaiyko Bridge achieves the main
goal of a bridge: to connect two places.
